A laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. The first laser was built in 1960 by Theodore H. Maiman at HRL, based on theoretical work by Charles Hard Townes and Arthur Leonard Schawlow.
Today we find Optical systems everywhere in this modern world, with an increasing number of applications covering medical sciences (vision technologies, surgical instrumentation, medical imaging), space exploration (telescopes, lenses, spectrometers), telecommunications (fiber optics), information science (quantum computing), Industries (from cutting and welding) and military/weaponry technology. Furthermore, laser and optical technology is used in analytical tools for chemistry and biology to perform applied research. Apart from above we do use optics in everyday life such as telecommunication, eyewear, cameras and many more.
